Pros and cons of running a handmade business.

Are you thinking of starting a handmade business but aren't 100% sure whether you should yet? Keep reading to find out my pros and cons, which may help you make an informed decision.

However, if you're already thinking of running a handmade business and are in a good financial position to make the jump, then I would say go for it! It's an amazing experience, even if it doesn't end up being something you pursue.

1. You are the boss.

My first pro is that you get to be the boss. What could be better than that huh? You get to do things, how, when, and the exact way you want them done. You get to go on breaks whenever you like, have your lunch whenever suits you best.... You see where I'm going here? You get the freedom that working for someone else doesn't come with.

2. Forget 9 to 5, say hello to 24/7.

Yep, you read that correctly. When it comes to running your own business, it tends to completely consume every hour of every day. Out of choice, of course. However, you subconsciously become very obsessed with exploring new ideas, so even when you're not physically making products, you may still being doing research of some sort at 3 o'clock in the morning (yup, that's what my life is right now). 😅

3. No boredom here.

Another pro is that if your business is centred around something you love (which it definitely should be) there is just no room to get bored. You can always explore new avenues, new products, new opportunities. Oh, and if you have no employees like me, you may end up being the business manager, the photographer, the production manager, the sales team, the social media manager and the receptionist all in one! (I think that one probably should have been in the cons section..... oops). 😅 Either way though, you absolutely won't have time to get bored!

4. Negative reviews hurt.

Thankfully, I don't get many of these, but if you have an online shop, you will undoubtedly get one at some point. Imagine spending time and effort hand making each item with love and care, to then have a negative review left without any private message explaining the problem. As hard as you try not to care, you will probably take it to heart, and it takes a while to accept it. Imagine getting 100 positive reviews and 1 negative review, which on Etsy can really hurt a small handmade shop's sales, which sucks. The review cannot be deleted unless you have a valid reason like postal delays for example. 😒

5. Your confidence will skyrocket!

Since running my handmade jewellery business, my confidence has grown dramatically. If someone asked me a few months before I opened my shop if I thought I could be a business owner I would have laughed in their face..... well I guess I was very wrong! Producing products which people pay real money for makes me feel so extremely proud of myself, and being present on social media building relationships with my customers has boosted my confidence no end. I am eternally grateful for what this opportunity has done for me, and I really hope it does the same for you too.

So, my overall advice would be..... go for it. Running a business has so many more pros than cons, I barely touched the surface in this article! If you're sick and tired of working for someone else and hate the thought of going to work every day, what are you even waiting for? Life is wayyy too short to wake up unhappy. Go pursue your passion, there is a whole world of opportunities out there waiting for you!
